When arriving in South Africa after World War two at age 8 years, the author is disillusioned. He had dreamed of an Africa with tropical regions, jungles and abundant wildlife at every turn. Instead he finds himself in a dusty West Rand gold mining town where he will grow up for the next 12 years. Not only that, as an immigrant from England he and his older brother find themselves victims of a lingering hatred of the British resulting from the Boer War, which they had known nothing about.

On reaching the age of 20 the Author decides to look for the real Africa he had once dreamed of. So he and a companion set out on long motorcycle journey. Along the way they see wild animals and many scenic wonders. They also discover unexpected home truths about the rapidly changing face of Africa.
